Is the end of the laptop nigh?

Untitled by hollowcrown on flickr

Martyn Wallace, official Digital Chap at O2 posted a link to this story earlier today, and asked his followers if he thought the death of the laptop was nigh.

I don’t think it is, because I think the reasons cited by both “road warriors” in the article won’t be readily overcome. Below is the conversation Martyn and I had about it. Have a read of the article and let me know what you think.

So, what do you reckon? Is the laptop slowing going the way of the VHS and audio cassettes, or does it still have relevance and advantages?

  1.  @KevinGilmartin  @annedreshfield I ended up buying the Wacom Bamboo stylus (I have some of their other products) and have really enjoyed it so far. I’ve heard some rumors about the rubber tip breaking easily, but I haven’t had a problem with mine.

  2. @annedreshfield Thanks Anne, I really do think that rumours of the laptop’s demise have been exaggerated. I also bought a stylus for the iPad; a Jot Pro. It was a kickstarter project by a company called Adonit, definitely recommend it for regular stylus users.

  3. I’ve definitely found that buying a stylus for my iPad helps with productivity, but it’s true, typing is harder on a touchscreen than it is on a keyboard. Great for checking things on the go, but if I sat down with my iPad like I sit down with my laptop, I just wouldn’t get as much work done. That being said, my desk set-up is pretty mobile: I have an 11-inch Air that I bring to and from work, and a monitor and wireless keyboard that sit at my desk. It’s pretty hassle-free. Anyway, welcome to Livefyre, and please feel free to let us know if you have any questions or feedback for us!

As someone who manages online communities as part of my job a tablet just doesn’t cut it.

Facebook app has NO admin functionality and trying to admin from mobile Facebook (or even full site but on Safari) is like pulling teeth.

Add in that copy/paste is not user friendly and typing at any great speed on a touch screen is not easy and you’ll find that for me at least it is much easier to wait and do work on my laptop than attempt to do it while out and about on a tablet.

I love my tablet for media consumption but for work purposes it does not compare.
